and other top congressional leaders weren't told sooner. a time line cnn has put together shows the republican house majority leader may have known about former cia director david petraeus' extramarital affair before the president did. that's according to aides to congressman eric cantor who tell us he found out from an fbi employee concerned that national security might have been breached as a result of the affair. cantor was told on october 27th. president obama didn't find out about the affair until after election day. congressional leaders from both parties are upset that neither they nor the president were informed until late last week. >> obviously this was a matter involving a potential compromise of security. and the president should have been told about it at the earliest date. >> reporter: a u.s. official said there was no breach of security as a result of the affair. a cantor aide says the congressman called the fbi's leadership to report the information he got on october 31st. but according to "the wall street journal," the fbi's probe had already been under way for

a break the no tax pledge. that is a hopeful sign, folks, because a new cnn/orc poll shows more than two thirds of americans believe a trip over that cliff would create major problems, perhaps even a crisis. cnn political editor paul steinhauser is live from washington, d.c. this morning. nice to see you, paul. so the fiscal cliff triggers back-breaking tax hikes and massive spending cuts. you've got more numbers that show what type of budget plan americans actually prefer. >> exactly. one of the big arguments, zoraida, is should it be all spending cuts to get us there or tax increases, as well? brand-new numbers just out from cnn/orc. only about one in three say whatever deal should be struck should be just spending cuts. but almost seven in ten, two thirds of americans say the plan should include spending cuts and tax increases. our poll indicates americans are not so optimistic a deal will get done and if it doesn't get done, who gets the blame? look at this right here, about 45% say republicans in congress will be blamed if there is no deal and the country falls off the fiscal cliff.

" tonight, cnn national security contributor, fran townsend. she's also a member of the cia external add voizry committee and knowed a lot about what it means to have top clearance. the name of the fbi agent, frederick humphries, who was by the way, involved in foiling a terrorist attack in 1999. very accomplished fbi agent. what do you know about the relationship? >> it's interesting. apparently, i understand from a senior law enforcement official that humphries and jill kelley met when she attended the citizens academy. this is a sort of familiarization program that the fbi runs across the country in communities to familiarize people and sort of get them to understand the work of the fbi in their community so it's part of the see something, say something. this is another mean of the fbi reaching out in local communities. jill kelley attended in tampa. agent humphries i'm also told is a member of the fig. field intelligence group. it would make sense. part of their responsibility is to go out, to gather information, you know, appropriate to their mission. and the fact is, that because j

-and-take to get there. listen to this. 72% in our brand-new cnn/orc poll say they want president obama to compromise with republicans on taxes and spending. an identical 72% want republicans to do the same, compromise with the other side. as for what compromise should entail, 67% favor a mix of spending cuts and tax increases. that's what they say real progress would look like. keeping them honest, real progress is one thing. washington progress is another. so far at least we see much more of the second than the first, and we're getting late new word that any progress might be stalled. more on that shortly. first, a good example of washington progress. republican lawmakers standing up in a limited way to a beltway power broker named grovier norquist over the 1980s era pledge he pressures them to sign promising not to raise any taxes ever. >> i'm not obligated on the pledge. i made tennesseans aware. i was just elected. the only thing i'm honoring is the oath i take when i serve when i'm sworn in this january. >> that's senator bob corker and one of the a handful up republican lawmakers

remember, in a lot of our jobs, we have cnn or span = = or cspan but i did not have it on. by first reaction was i just ran my pantyhose and i have to brief a general. this is not a good sign. my second reaction was there is a lot of smoke coming out of that building. one of the privileges i had is parking. very few get parking at the pentagon. the reality is i ran to my car, got people out of that building up from the point on, our world and the united states and around the world has changed. cyber has taken a huge role and place in the world since. we entered into a global war on terror, started in afghanistan, went to iraq, back to afghanistan. there will still be peacekeeping troops and they are huge challenges about stability of government and stability's and our roles as that of those countries. we will continue to adjust would need to be done but none of that is done without our dependence and involvement in the cyberworld. technology drives everything we do the world wide web has made us more interconnected than at any time in our human history. the vast majority of our empe
